Bourne Rugby Club took another step to avoiding relegation in Counties 1 Midlands East (South) with a comprehensive 39-16 victory away to Peterborough Lions on Saturday 1st March.

On a run of 3 consecutive wins and having recently found their best form of the season, Bourne travelled to Peterborough determined to make the most of the newly-found momentum. They began the quicker of the two sides, with winger Matt Lines latching on to a clever attacking kick from full-back Liam Shields before dispatching of the coveting tackler to crash over in the corner. Lions fired back with a converted try of their own, before Bourne captain Sam Evison put his side into the lead once more through a penalty. From here, the home side dictated proceeding for the remainder of the first half, capitalising on some ill-discipline to go into the break 16-8 up, courtesy of 3 penalties.

Following the interval, it was one way traffic via the away side. Hooker Harry Thornburn the scorer on 3 occasions, 2 from a rolling maul, one of Bourne’s main attacking strengths this season, and one in the corner following a midfield break and some precise short passing. Jonjo Roberts returned from an injury setback on the wing in the second half, and marked his return with a fine try off the back of some crisp footwork.

Bourne now we’re 16 points clear, but having lost from a similar position in the return fixture, we’re not resting on their laurels. Despite Lions threatening their line for large periods of the final 20 minutes, the away side held firm. Flanker Harry Cole finished things off for Bourne, breaking through the Lions defence and diving over for a try with the final play of the game. The conversion made the final score 39-16 to Bourne, and maintained the spot at 9th in the League.

Bourne host Towcestrians this weekend, before making the short trip to Champions Stamford on the 22nd March in what looks set to be a fantastic occasion for local rugby.
